Choose a place to linger

Kakheti rewards a visit built around a few good stops. The National Wine Agency identifies it as Georgia’s principal wine region, with vineyards in the Alazani and Iori basins. Familiar names on labels include Saperavi and Rkatsiteli, but a visit becomes more interesting when you ask a producer to explain their own grapes, site and method.

Sighnaghi combines narrow streets, tiled roofs and views over the Alazani Valley. Give the town time on foot rather than treating it only as a viewpoint between tastings. Telavi and the surrounding wine villages offer another way to organise a regional stay. Choose your base around the cellars and cultural stops you actually want to visit.

Learn what qvevri means

A qvevri is an earthenware vessel used to make, age and store wine. The traditional Georgian method is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Its significance includes the knowledge passed between generations and the communal work around vines and harvest, as well as the vessel itself.

At a cellar, ask to see how the producer works. Which grapes went into the wine? Was it made in qvevri or another vessel? How does the current vintage differ from the last? A tasting is more memorable when the host can tell a particular story instead of taking you through a rushed sequence of glasses.

Plan the visit, not a checklist

Contact the cellar before setting out. Agree a time, language, group size and whether the visit includes food, a tour or a tasting only. A family cellar may need different arrangements from a larger estate. Check whether children or non-drinkers can join comfortably, and ask how payment and bottle purchases work.

Keep the itinerary compact enough to stay for a conversation. If the first visit runs longer than expected, a day with spare time will feel better than one built around several tightly timed appointments. Make transport part of the plan from the start, with a driver who will not drink.

Stay for another morning

An overnight stay separates arrival, tasting and departure into a more relaxed rhythm. You can explore Sighnaghi’s streets, arrange a cellar visit on another part of the day and still sit down to a proper meal. Check your accommodation’s position against the final stop rather than assuming every address is close to the town centre.

Explore our Kakheti destination guide, then send the places and dates you have in mind through the itinerary desk. For transport between confirmed stops, ask about a private driver.

Good to know.

Can Kakheti be visited without drinking wine?

Yes. Historic towns, landscape, food and cultural stops can shape the visit. Tell the host when booking if you want a non-drinking visit.

Should I book a family cellar in advance?

Contact the host before travelling and confirm the visit, meal, language, group size and price. Do not assume a small working cellar accepts unannounced visitors.
